About Graz
Graz is Austria’s second-largest city, with around 290,000 residents, and the capital of the southern state of Styria. Its remarkably well-preserved old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the city is also a UNESCO City of Design. With four universities and roughly 60,000 students, it has a young, creative atmosphere centred on the Schlossberg hill and its landmark clock tower.
Neighbourhoods in Graz
The Innere Stadt is the compact historic centre. Geidorf, to the north, is green, quiet and full of students near the university; Lend and Gries, west of the Mur river, are multicultural, creative and rapidly gentrifying; Jakomini and St. Leonhard are central and popular with younger renters.
Living in Graz
Graz is noticeably more relaxed and affordable than Vienna, with plenty of sunshine, easy cycling and a strong food culture fed by the surrounding Styrian countryside. The South Styrian wine region and the Slovenian border are an easy day trip away, making it a favourite with students, families and anyone who wants city life at a gentler pace.

More about willhaben alerts →Richtwert Styria 2026: how much rent is allowed?
Since 1 April 2026 the Richtwert for Styria is 9.30 € per m² (Statistik Austria).
